I love to speak with students and aspiring authors about how I wrote The Runaway’s Gold (Abrams/Amulet Books, May 2015).
I think writing historical fiction is about as close to time travel as a person can get, and love to inspire others to use primary sources for discovering the human details of another time and place. Whether it’s the smell of whale oil burning, the clip clop of hooves on cobblestones, or the tight grip of a calloused palm, it’s the personal observations from days gone by that make believable dialog and loveable characters.
Join me as I discuss the behind-the-scenes adventures of getting a novel published, and how the discovery of my grandfather’s long lost stories inspired me to write The Runaway’s Gold.
